We feel so blessed to have found this gem. This beautifully constructed cape was designed with windows to optimize 180 degree views with beautiful sunsets and natural light. Carina Construction delivered a module home that is energy efficient has sturdy construction and well drained foundation with comfortable in floor heat. The open floor plan maximizes the living space and allows for entertaining with a large granite island. Matt has been a responsive and helpful resource even though we are the second owner of this home.
We worked with Carina to have our dream home built in Ithaca. Matt, Elise and their team were excellent all the way through the process. They were understanding of our design goals, helped us develop a vision for the house, and got it done on time even in the middle of a pandemic (the house was finished June 15th 2020). They were also accommodating to our changes and updates to the design during the build. We didn't encounter any issues that were not easily fixed in a professional way throughout the whole process. When we first met Matt, Phil told him outright that he would need to earn our trust since we had had such terrible experiences with several builders in the past. We had decided to check out Carina Construction since it was near to the land that we had bought.From the first meeting, we could tell Matt was different from all the other builders with which we had worked before. After being honest about timeline – we would have to wait until the following year to start, Matt and Elise offered suggestions to optimize the configuration of the house and save us money after visiting our site.As we began to work closely with Matt and Elise on the details of the house and structures, it became clear that they both had tremendous expertise and were truly collaborating with us to conjure a final configuration that would truly meet our needs. This was vastly different from any experience we had with any other builder.And yet, from this planning stage, the best was yet to come.The following spring, right on schedule, clearing and excavation began. The entire process of preparation for the foundation, delivery and connection of the modules, inside finishing were, in a word, amazing. Phil had worked in the construction trades many years earlier, and there were finish items that he had not noticed that Matt identified and was not satisfied with, that were then corrected.When Phil needed someone to help design and construct a pole barn, since Matt did not build those, he referred him to an equally superb contractor for that part of the project.When the house was completed, we struggled to complete a punchlist of items for correction – there were some but very minor and resolved quickly.The entire experience with Matt, Elise and all of the Carina folks – Amy, Cassie, Rob, everyone – was excellent, something that we never would have expected when we first realized that we would have to build since we could not find an acceptable existing house.To anyone who has decided to build, and is searching in this area for a builder – stop looking and get on Carina’s schedule; you simply cannot do any better.Phil and Tina Berler

It is rare that I am moved to post reviews on line. However, my experience with Carina Construction over the past 8 months has been an experience worthy of comment. The planning stage for my new home was a truly custom design process. Both Matt (builder) and Elise (interior designer) Haney spent many hours with me, getting to know who I am, how I live, what I want in my home, etc. From that, together we designed a home that accommodates and expresses my life and style, stays within my budget, and is perfect in the natural setting I had chosen.Throughout the building process, I've often been amazed at how readily they worked with me to incorporate changes, rethink design features, and respond to my endless questions and concerns. In spite of this winter's brutal weather, they've worked on the house nearly every day; and, when delays were inevitable, I was always notified promptly and told when things could be resumed. Being a DYI'er, I have a critical eye for workmanship. Work is completed professionally and any issues have been addressed promptly.Frequent communication with both Matt and Elise keep things on track. They are always responsive by phone, email, or dropping by the office. I'm never left wondering what's happening or that their attention has moved on to another project.Thanks to their skills and experience, their enthusiasm and creativity, and their highly personal attention, I will have an affordable home way beyond anything I could have dreamed up. We worked with Carina Construction out of Ithaca NY and over all were pretty happy with our Simplex home. We had no problem selling it when we decided to move. Carina did a good job coordinating with Simplex to fix the few problems we encountered.

Our prefab manufacturer recommended Carina Construction to oversee the site construction aspects of our project. We got an initial estimate from Matt but went with a contractor with a slightly lower bid. However, the actual cost ended up being significantly higher than the contractor’s estimate. In addition, the contractor’s construction standards did not meet our own expectations and he missed the contract completion deadline by several months. The project was about to fall apart. In the end, we hired Matt as a project manager to oversee our general contractor and the project to its finish. Matt successfully mitigated the contract disputes and saved the project for us. Matt also brought a very high standard for finish work as we expected. We do wish that we went with Matt from the beginning, because we surely would have saved tens of thousands of dollars and had the project completed the way we wanted it and on time.

Four years ago we did our homework and contracted with Matt Haney of Carina Construction for the cottage of our dreams on Cayuga Lake. It was a difficult site and we made several modifications of the Simplex design. From my experience. the only definite in home building is that there will be uncertainties, generally out of anyone’s control, that will affect the project (weather, back-ordered materials, etc.). That being said, the best anyone can do is to work with a builder who is able to adapt to the unexpected, has a good plan in place, is experienced enough to see predictable pitfalls, will have a contingency plan around those pitfalls, and (most importantly) is of solid enough character to make things right and look after your best interest. Those are the characteristics that my wife and I found in Carina Construction and, more specifically, Carina’s owner, Matt Haney. Throughout the process, Matt showed a consistent, experienced approach toward managing the project and never took his eye off the end goal: building a dream home for our family. I would recommend Matt and Carina to anyone interested in building in the Finger Lakes area.
